That is what a heatilator is designed to do, circulate the warm air from the metal jacket into the room. Full use of the fire’s fuel is to have the smoke warm you from a hearth in the middle of the room; most people prefer the chimney to take the smoke out. More than half the heat goes up the chimney from a fireplace, so the owners don’t choke.

When a heater is off for a while, the hotter water goes to the top where some models of heater have the sensor. By running the water a bit, the heater starts the burner as the hot water at the top is evacuated.

This is the problem that many don’t like to hear. To be secure about a heater firing consistently, not only do parts have to be cleaned and moved around back to where the factury had them; but pressures and temperatures have to be measured and set as they stray. It would be nice if it only took parts changing after a few years; but the new ignitions have safety devices that are sensitive to air pressure, combustion pressure and gas pressure, as well as temperature, as they follow the physics of gas laws while metals expand, contract, fatigue, and move over time. Contacts corrode and oxidize from acidic air.

Old gas furnaces with mechanical switches and standing pilots could be neglected for decades, so the less familiar with heaters will probably believe for another decade that heaters haven’t changed and they can get away with no annual service. It’s been about ten years since electronic ignitions have been in most gas heaters and it takes about 20 years for institution ideas to change.

When the electronic safety ignitions start giving problems, the gas heater needs to be looked at completely, completely cleaned, and everything tested and adjusted with sensitive instruments. Homeowners have the choice of learning the HVAC trade and gaining enough experience to have and use all the test instruments as well as a factory-trained and experienced tech – or make a more productive search for someone who is competent to complete a factory check-list maintenance and adjustment procedure every year.

A first step could be to clean the intake and exhaust completely to see if it lets the unit work. Then clean and tighten the electrical connections and flame sensor. After that, it is time for the sensitive instruments.

It is better to keep the outside unit running in cold weather to keep the refrigerant moving and the oil lubrication warmer. It isn’t going to save much money by keeping the compressor running instead of using the expensive electric backup heat, but it can save the compressor.

When you seal and insulate the house, the heater will run a shorter time. If you find that you need 40,000 btu PER HOUR to heat a house, and you install a 40,000 btu PER HOUR furnace, it will run the full HOUR in the coldest weather. Shorter cycles in the coldest weather tell you that the heater is larger than needed, so an 80,000 btu PER HOUR heater will only need to run 1/2 an HOUR in the coldest weather in a 40,000 btu per HOUR heat loss house, WITH SHORTER RUN CYCLES.

As the fan goes on, that says that you have line voltage and 24 volt control power. Now you just need to find out if the gas is on, the gas pressure is right, the gas control or gas valve is working right, nothing is clogged, and the limit controls and wiring is clean, tight and connected without failure.

If service companies go through the whole preventive maintenance procedure:
+Clean and tighten all connections, sometimes meaning removing molex connectors and direct solder-wiring the connections.
    +Replace the flame sensor.
+Measure and adjust the gas, chamber, vent and blower pressures.
+Check the power wiring and polarity.
If the entire procedure is done with all the jobs checked off the list, and it still has the problem, replace the unit.

You might be changing to propane to get a better price; but in many areas, propane is the same cost per btuh as electricity. so you could install electric baseboard or an electric furnace.

You are on the right path; the first sequencer in line starts the fan motor, so look for the fan motor wire coming from a sequencer.

Quixtar has a cleaning product that cleans away paraffin (crayons) called LOC. See them on the web. They also have an advisory to tell you how to clean certain problem soils.
