Usually the problem is strayed settings of a fan/limit control or the same needing replacement.

If you want reliability, then don’t get a heat pump. A heat pump is an air conditioner that runs all year round, so wears faster than an air conditioner used for cooling alone. In the coldest winter weather, you also pay for electric heat at high rates.

Put in electric baseboard, separate air conditioning, and a Toyo diesel fuel direct vent oil heater in the living room area and you will have no maintenance problems, good longevity, and the oil heater will be 1/3rd the cost of electric heat and half the cost of heat pump electricity. Diesel oil can be delivered or picked up at any truck stop.

Oil-based paint is used regularly on radiators and baseboard (the oil base doesn’t stay oily.) Latex paint sometimes fades and changes when heated.

Did you fill the oil tube completely with fresh oil after you changed the nozzle before you installed the oil tube? Air trapped in the line can create the problem.

However, after you get all the parts back correctly, you failed to purchase the combustion test instruments you need to assure the correct air/fuel mixture and flame shape so there is zero smoke and at least 11% CO2.

depends on which water heater and when it was made. Oldies had separate regulators just as old furnaces and boilers did.

Check the white plastic incoming water dip tube inside the tank. They have been known to fail, causing short-feeding of incoming cold water through the top of the tank and out. They are inexpensive.

As your area is periodically subject to freezing weather, either drain the boiler system completely or put antifreeze in the boiler system. Drain the domestic water heater so that will not break. Put trailer antifreeze in the toilet bowls and drain all the lines.

    OR

Leave the heat on and get someone to check that it is working or call for repairs if it is not working during the winter with the thermostat set to 55F. Drain the domestic water heater and the water lines, as standing water can breed disease.

Not sure what you are heating the radiators with. Is there a separate boiler that heats the radiators or does the gas water heater heat them also?

In either case, the water could be shut off and the traps and toilet bowls filled with trailer antifreeze. The water heater would be shut off and drained because disease can breed in water held inside for a long time.

If a separate boiler heats the radiators, then the gas should be left on to keep the system from possible freezing. Set the thermostat to 55F.

Paint stripper makes the job of scraping a bit easier, sandblasting works, too. Oil-based paints work well. Latex paints tend to soften and stain. For color, the high-temp automobile block paints work well. Old-timers used the aluminum or stove paints.

You can do a reliable heat estimation for the proper size of your heat pump and the ducts required in each room at:

    Do not guess at this.

Most heat pump blowers can be used in multiple positions; either updraft, horizontal or downdraft by following the manufacturers directions.

1920’s houses were built before insulation was a serious thought. Air conditioning didn’t come along for another 40 years for most homes.

The lesson here is that insulation is a real requirement to make cooling units work better without having huge electric bills from huge air conditioners. Another lesson is that square feet of floor space has little to do with air conditioner size and square feet of walls, windows, and ceilings with insulation has a lot more to do with it.

You now have the choice of continuing to spend large electric bills with a larger air conditioner to cool your home, or to spend a little on a lot more insulation to help your limited-size air conditioner do enough cooling.
