You describe a noisy fan relay. It could be because it is old and sticky – so needs replacing, or the voltage is low from bad wire connections – so the wire connections nned to be cleaned and tightened.

Some older gas units used millivolt pilot controls. They need to have their contacts cleaned periodically so the wires are tightened into clean screws and there should be no unsoldered breaks with wire nuts around them. Then again, the thermostats couild be old and sticking.

Seems like a plan made in DIY heaven that will have a ton of coal land on the old friend and get him there earlier than expected. A screw feeder is expensive, so is probably out of the safe picture. Try an oil heater that requires no dangerous weight to feed it. Who in the world is thinking that an elderly person is capable of carrying coal for any length of time?

Fiberglass insulation formed to the size of the pipe outside, split so it can be placed around the pipe, fastened with glue on a flap over the outside, is available from plumbing/heating suppiers locally on order. Elbow and fiting covers are also available.

If the pressure was too high, it would light and puff out of the chamber silently. An explosion is the result of a delayed ignition from misaligned burners/runners.

Makes hot waster up to its flow rate well, doesn’t have tank losses. It requires a large supply wire, breaker, and spins the meter really fast.

The usual procedure is to clean the flame sensor. Get a pro in there to do a complete pre-season checklist.

This kind of heat has been in use for over a century, especially in the older commercial buildings like schools, town halls, post offices, etc, using steam radiators and pipes at the ceiling. For half a century, Edwards Engineering has made their valance units for a similar purpose for use mostly in hospitals, offices, schools, and nursing homes:
    http://www.edwards-eng.com/valance.pdf

The result is similar to what happens in a well-insulated warm air heated home. The hot air rises to the ceiling, the ceiling becomes warmer than the rest of the room and the heat from the ceiling radiates downward. The missing is the ductwork, whoosh of the air, and the holes in the wall, replaced by the radiant panel. The cove panel sends the heat directly to the occupants without having to heat the air; but the hot surface also convectively heats the ceiling to spread more heat downward from the ceiling. It is a quiet, effective form of heat. As gas and oil become closer in cost to electric per unit of heat, cove heating becomes more desirable.

For an entire house, the Edwards hydronic system provides much the same benefits at the cost of the gas or oil savings; but is a greater initial investment. The up side is that Edwards units also cool the house from the same units without ductwork.

The furnace works; but you just don’t like the air coming out that cool. It is not yet winter, so the house doesn’t need much heat, so the heating stops when the thermostat is satisfied. You need a tech to see if the unit is working according to factory specs. New high-efficiency furnaces do not make air as warm as old ones in order to improve the efficiency you want. Have a pro look at it to make sure you are not in the process of making problems by amateur wiring of a thermostat when it is not necessary.

That is a symptom of a dirty or maladjusted flame sensor. When the control can not sense a flame accurately, it recycles. If you can’t identify and clean it properly, call a pro.

Following the instructions written by the manufacturer in the homeowner manual, the next step is to call the repair company that installs that brand.

You have the result of touching all the wires together. The most likely problem now is that the transformer that provides the power to the low voltage circuit is burned. If you are lucky, the transformer was protected by a small fuse that you can replace from Radio Shack. Search for the transformer to see if there is a fuse block inside it or nearby; if not, the transformer might have to be replaced. It is also possible you fried control ciruits in either or both heat and AC.

From the novice way you approached the thermostat problem, you would be better off to call a pro.
