Yes, you wrap your openings before you install your windows. Tyvek offers some great training own how to use their products and HOW TO PROPERLY FLASH AN OPENING. The training is free and generally it last about an hour. Look up their web-site, I am not sure if they have the training on-line yet.
FHIWindows1ParticipantLook at your hinges and see if they have a brand name on them. Contact whoever made the door and place a warranty claim or buy another glass insert.
FHIWindows1ParticipantThey were not done wrong, it’s just a fact of life. If the sun hits your door if or you have a full glass storm door in front of the door, the sun will bake the finish. Since the door is full of foam it collects the heat and the surface gets very hot—hot paint, stain of varnish just breaks down. The uv rays will also kill your finish within a few years.
FHIWindows1Participanthttp://www.vinyl-replacement-windows.com/ you might want to post your question on this site. I can generally answer most window questions but yours is beyond my knowledge.
FHIWindows1ParticipantMost of the steel doors that the home centers sell are made of a very lite steel—-they dent. Go to your local depot or lowes and look at the doors on display, most contain dents.
FHIWindows1ParticipantPurchase a fiberglass door so you will not have to deal with the door rusting (like a steel door) or rotting (like a wood door). Just keep up on painting the jamb (wood frame) every few years.
FHIWindows1ParticipantOn-line lead companies sell your info to 3-20 contractors for $35.00-$80.00. I have purchased leads from these services in the past and not one of them have ever called one of my references.
Look into Angies list or a similar site that has customer reviews.
FHIWindows1Participant#1. Your frame would stil be 5″ to tall.
#2. You will void your warranty.
#3. You generally custom order doors that will fit.
FHIWindows1ParticipantA replacement window is installed without removing all of the trim and the frame.
A new construction window requires the removal of the interior and exterior trim and the frame.
Generally new construction windows cost more because they take longer to install and require new trim.
FHIWindows1ParticipantLook on your sashes for a sticker with a code on it. Then go to http://cpd.nfrc.org/pubsearch/psMain.asp and enter the code. Call and see if your windows are still under warranty, if not you should be able to order parts.
Don’t buy cheap windows for your next project.
FHIWindows1ParticipantIs there any evidence on the inside or outside trim to show that something settled? You might want to try to install a few 3″ screws through the top frame in order to make it straight. Go slow with the screws, you might have to remove the top trim.
FHIWindows1ParticipantSince I can’t post pictures here I will give you a link to a place that I posted pictures of the process. Generally you need to build the opening out 2.25″ providing you are using 5/4 stock or brickmold for exterior trim.

FHIWindows1ParticipantWatch for wires in the wall under the window and plan to hire someone to move them. Is your window RO width the same as your patio door’s RO?
FHIWindows1ParticipantGenerally Pella and Andersen doors are meant to be installed before your flooring. If the doors are installed and then you add flooring your will take away 3/4-1.25″ of the sill height. If the doors are installed in a kitchen with vinyl flooring then the sills stick up and create a tripping hazard. The doors are made to clear your “average” flooring (carpet, hardwood or tile with backer board), and in some cases they will clear a thick welcome mat.
Did your installers place a board under the door prior to the installation? If so, see if they can remove the board and lower the door by 3/4″.
FHIWindows1ParticipantThere are some companies that drill small holes in the glass in order to even the pressure and stop the fogging. I am not familiar with the process and I am not sold on the concept at all. From what I hear, the price is generally a little less than an actual replacement.
Good luck with your project!
