on wood i always use the strippers that require neutralizing with mineral spirits. the water neutralized strippers tend to raise the grain of the wood too much to suit me.

if there is no floor in the attic, check to see if the ceiling joists are overlapped at the wall location. if the joist are overlaping, the wall is load bearing.

there was an episode of this old house where they made plaster molding. the first step is to make a template of the molding that exists.
place the plaster or drywall mud on area and use the template to scrape off the excess. it may require several coats and scrapings to get the correct contour for the new molding. if you use drywall compoun, add plaster of parris to it to prevent themud from cracking. when adding the plaster of parris, you will have about 20 minutes of working time, so dont mix too much at a time.

i would install a 2×4 between the joists at each end of the opening. install 356 casing that projects about 1/2 inch past the opening edges and use that as the support for the hatch cover.

did all of the paper come off? if so, replace the drywall.

if just the top layer of paper came off: I prefer to replace the drywall in this situation. however, it can be repaired. first, prime with an oil based primer. let dry 24 hours and then sand to remove the very high points from the paper. prime again, let dry overnight. skim coat with drywall compound to smooth the surface. when dry sand to remove any defects from the application of the mud.

prime with drywall primer and you are ready to paint.

this is a good example of where using square drive (cabinet) screws are an advantage. it is very difficult to strip the square drive screws even when screwing into very hard wood.

you can fit inside corners using a coping saw on one of the boards. outside corners need to be mitered to get the proper fit. yuo can use a table saw or a circular cut saw to make the beveled cut, but is is a lot easier with a miter saw. if you use the circular cut saw, you will need to use a speed square to get a good, perpendicular and straight cut on the board.

congratulations on solving the problem. 36 teeth are a lot for a circle saw. also, always use carbide teeth on the saw as it will cut better and last a lot longer.

to prevent bleedthru and winding up with a pea green tint, you need to first use a stain blocking primer tinted lighter shade of cream. dark blue and red are the hardest colors to cover with a light neautral tone paint.

for the smoothest finish, spray paint it. there are additives available at paint stores that make the paint flow better and dry slower to give a better finish when using a brush

tin oxide is used to give the finial polish to stones. tin oxide is available from lapidary (rock) shops. use with a fine cotton polishing wheel and keep the wheel and surface being polished damp for best results

I have used marine poly on a boat with great sucess. It does tend to darken the tone of the wood though.
