You diagnosed the exact problem! I removed the piston assembly and can see from your photo of the new part that the rubber gasket in the piston assembly has almost completely worn away. There’s no way that it can stop water from just gushing back into the tub as it’s draining. I am extremely grateful for your help, and relieved this will only cost $11 to fix!
