That’s ok. I just found out that I cannot use it anyway, because it is too tall. With the flex coupling I can’t get the waste shoe to fit under my tub. Looks like I’ll have to get a short brass coupling and sweat it on. Anyway, thanks for the info.

Removing the paint over the old mud was not a problem, but I got carried away and went up too far. A friend was concerned this would create a problem, other than creating a rough surface, because it would decrease the moisture barrier in the old drywall and allow moisture to seap into the gypsum and into the wall cavity; which he thought would lead to more mold years down the road.

My assumption would be that if I can put a skim coat on and then cover it with a couple coats of a good primer, like Kilz, and then a good quality paint then I shouldn’t have to worry too much about the moisture barrier. Would you agree?

By the way, thanks for all your quick responses.

I removed the bottom half of the walls to cleanup mold that resulted from a leaky pipe.

However, my question is since when I stripped the paint (even thought I should not have) some of the kraft paper came off and now looks like a brown paper bag. Do I need to replace this portion of the drywall or will it be ok to mud over it?

Also, if I hadn’t removed some of the paint, how would I get an even surface?
