The idea was sound so I tried it. I tried it on both locks. I failed to budge them.

There has got to be a way!

    Thanks for trying to help,

    Doug,

Thanks for trying. If only there were holes leading to set screws behind the faceplate. There is only a backer plate with a tubular guide that keeps the bolt, which is hinged in the back, in position. The backer plate comes right out and you can see the innards of the entire lock mechanism.

I think I need either to hire an older, experienced, locksmith to do the job, or to get a copy of the Ultra 800 instruction sheets. Does anybody out there have the instruction sheets for the Ultra 800?

    Thanks again,
    Walt

    Doug,

The first place I looked was under the faceplate that is on the end of the door, surrounding the bolt. On the Ultra 700 there are 2 screws under the faceplate that tighten or spread the sides of the lock apart to grip the door. The Ultra 800 does not work this way. Peering inside the lock from the bolt end I can see two screws holding one side of the lock to the other. The problem then is to access the heads of the 2 screws.

The set screws holding the cylinders are accessible only from the top or the bottom of the lock. The cylinders of the Ultra 800, like those of the Ultra 700, are mounted 90 degrees to the side. That is, if the bolt of the Ultra 800 extends to your left at 9 o’clock, the slug of the cylinder is at 3 o’clock. (On the ultra 700 the slug would be at 9 o’clock.)

Do you have any other suggestions?

The Medeco Tech. Supt. line could only find instructions for the Ultra 700 in their files which they kindly faxed to me but which was of no help.

    Thanks for your patience.

Thanks for the quick response. I will attempt to pry the plate on the inside of the single cylinder lock on Friday. I will let you know if it gives way.
But the plate on the double cylinder appears to be held in place by the heavy duty cylinder guard and the inside cylinder. I don’t know how the locksmith (now out-of-business secured it since the cylinder set screws appear to be inside the lock mechanism!
