It sounds like it is to that point where it is beyond repair. I would probably contact the local Better Business Bureau to have them moderate a solution with your flooring contractor. It may be unpleasant to deal with the people who jerked you around for so long, but its better than the alternative of letting them keep your money and you get stuck with a bad floor. There is no reason you should be doing all of this work yourself. In most cases, if this goes to court, the installer will be held totally liable for the total replacement cost including removal of the old floor.

Most likely, the main cause for your problem is the unevenness of the subfloor. You step on a hollow spot and then step off and hear a pop. Depending on how widespread the problem is, you may be able to inject adhesive to fill the voids and repair it.Generally I consider a floor a total loss if the defective areas needing repair cover more than 20% of the total area. Its not very likely that you could reuse the wood if you took it up, because it may not come up in whole pieces. Are the places where the gaps are coming open mostly near the wall or all over? Was the wood solid or engineered?

O K, there are really two ways to fix this. There is a repair kit by Dri-tac which is a very thin adhesive that you drill a hole and shoot it through a syringe until the void is filled. You can get it at a local pro shop/supply house for flooring supplies. Or you could use the two part epoxy with the mixing nozzles, just drill an 1/8 inch hole and force the epoxy through it and it will dry very quickly. Clean up on the epoxy is mineral spirits- get it before it dries. Use matching wood filler over the holes

Couldn’t hurt to glue the joints, but it won’t work with Pergo because they use a wax and oil emulsion in the seams to repel water, so glue won’t bond to it. Other cheaper laminates will accept the glue just fine though.

Laminate flooring will perform best when the temperature and humidity remain fairly constant, so if you can achieve this with your room, then the Pergo should work. You could use epoxy or hot glue to fasten the trim to the aluminum, or pre drill and use finishing nails into the frame.

As a Lowes independent contractor/ installer I can tell you that the quality of workmanship and materials is second to none at Lowes. A bit of advice though, If you tell them that you want laminate, tile, and carpet installed, they will get a carpet crew to do all of it. Go in and pay for the laminate detail first, then after it’s installed, pay for the tile detail, then pay for the carpet detail. The $35 detail fee comes off the labor price, so you are not wasting any money by doing it separately, but you get a better chance of having a specialist installing your tile and wood/laminate this way.

I’m going to assume that the previous poster meant to say to use heavy duty construction adhesive under the steps and then to use the finishing nails to secure. We wouldn’t want those steps to squeak 😉

the main thing here is that a coating will not stick to the Pergo, so it is a waste of time to put a coating on it. Not to mention all of the mildew that is probably growing under it. Its gonna have to go.
