    Hi Bruno1949,

I thought I would let you know that my mother decided to tear the old flooring out. Yeah!

We have a new problem. My dad laid tar arto make the boards stick to the foundation. My dad says it is mastic. The contractor says it is tar. It does look like tar. My dad has deminitia. So who knows what is right.

The contractor came to my house and mention something about cleaning it all out, pouring cement over the old slab, not laying the plywood down. Then putting the new hardwood flooring down. This would cost $8,000. We said no.

We thought that the tar or mastic, could be heated which would allow it to spread and the new boards could be layed down and the plywood place over them, then the new flooring. My mom really wants the floor raised.

My dad said it would be too thin and wouldn’t stick.

He said he left some mastic remover in the bathroom at the house and that it would take it right up. More could be put on and then the plywood laid on the new boards.

I called the contractor and told him. He said it is tar and that it wouldn’t take it up. If he has to clean it off that would cost even more for labor.

My mother has already spent around $25,000.

This house was built in 1957. Do you know if it was common practice to use tar to laid subfloors then? I don’t remember what the material was.

    I appreciate your help.
