The red wire is connected to nothing, but comes out of the same opening as the black and white wires.

The bulb is not the problem.

The dimmer operates another spotlight, which works fine.

Is it possible the transformer (each light has one)needs replacing ? Do they get weaker or would the light not function at all if the transformer was kaput ? (The light does function now,but only at half strength.
