      Dear Bob,

My husband and I are considering buying a house built in 1951. Two rooms have beautiful knotty pine paneling. The foyer and a couple of walls in the living room have heavy tongue and groove paneling that is light colored, pretty much knot free and has many small worm holes. We thought that the house had a bug probelem until we noticed that the holes were on all of the light paneling. What kind of wood do you think this might be? What would you do with it? I.m not sure that I really like the wormy look, but if it’s some kind of special wood I would leave it alone. Any suggestions, comments from you would be appreciated. We are faithful viewers of your TV show and value your opinion.

      Thanks for your time.

      Sincerely,

      Jane Belanus

I had an old home in the mountains of N.C. that was paneled with wormy chestnut. Wish I could have saved it before they tore the house down. Get a hardwood expert to determine what species it is. It might be valuable and somebody might could use it to make some nice cabinet fronts.
