We’re building our dream home in the mountains of Jasper, GA.

We haven’t started yet and the land is still untouched.

What are some neat ideas for things to do before we start building, and during the building process itself? For instance, we want to hire a photographer to take some pictures of our family and the land before all the bulldozers mess things up. We also want to take pictures/videos throughout the building process. Sort of a scrapbook idea. Candle-lit dinners on the property? I’m talking about keepsake/memorabilia-type things.

Do you have any creative ideas? Also, if you have built your home already, what are some things that you did or wish you had done along the way?

I would find a place for a tripod that the builders will not disturb and try to take daily photos to get a time lapse effect. If you mark the bround and your tripod well, you can proably get it in the same place every day. Check out the film SMOKE. Harvey Keitel does something similar on his street corner every day.

Be sure to have plenty of duplex outlets if you own/use a lot of electrical ‘things’. You almost can’t have too many outlets in the food prep area of your kitchen.
Consider phone outlets at ALL locations of human endeavor, including the bathrooms.
Computer controlled ‘this and that’ are becoming more common – consider copper cable, optical lines and data lines at all locations where you might operate a computer station.
Where might you want to watch TV? Be sure to have the best quality cable installed CORRECTLY – using the best available quality parts [digital – HD quality].
Consider ceiling fan boxes installed in every living space – they hold more weight and are better quality.
