Nana – sounds like normal operation. Cycling of the unit back-flushes the minerals filtered (collected) by the resin (the active material of a water softener). After backflushing, it recharges the resin with the use of salt, and then puts the unit back in service.
If your unit has a timer, it may work one of two ways: by passage of time only, or by volume of water and cycle at a specific daily time after that volume has been reached.
Another type (Kinetico) has no timer or electrical connection, has two units and one tank, and cycles by water use and water power.
Hope this explains it for you.
