the walls need replaced but I can not do it right now(1921) they seem to be a mirage of plaster, dry-wall tape and filled in joint putty. they have some major cracks but they are not very deep yet. how should they be PROPERLY replaced and what can i do to decorate them untill i can have them replaced?

for now cut back on either side of the cracks so the plaster is solid. then put drywall mesh tape over the spot. then fill it in with joint compound. put the compound on in layers. start with a 4 or 6 inch knife then use and 8 inch then a 10 or 12 inch. sanding before the next coat. this will help hide the seams.
