Was planning on going with Andersen on contractor’s recommendation? Any horror stories with Andersen doors, windows? Everyone else I talk to suggests Marvin aluminum-clad. What are the differences between vinyl- and aluminum-clad? BTW, live in southern California so weathering is mainly sun.

What are you looking for by replacing your windows? How long do you want the windows to last? Do you want wood on the inside? Do you want to tilt the windows in order to clean them? Do you want windows that have average ratings or do you want windows that are rated really high? How long of a warranty do you need?

Generally new home builders like Andersen windows because the brand name sells the job.

Very few specialty window contractors use Andersen windows. Marvin has some very nice windows if you can afford the price tag. If you are looking for really good energy ratings then neither company comes close to the top of the list.

biggest difference between aluminum-clad and vinyl is you have more color options with aluminum. a lot of vinyl windows only come in white of tan due to darker colors heating up and warping in the sun. Though some manufactures do offer dark colors. usually aluminum-clad windows usually cost more than vinyl except in Andersen’s case where their vinyl clad window is more than most other major manufacturers aluminum clad product.
