Toilet makes a flushing sound

I have a small bathroom with shower near the back door. I thought I was hearing the toilet flush and I was home by muself. When I looked in the bowl, there was no movement of the water. I’ve heard it several times lately. One of the last times I was in the bathroom and even looked in the tank and saw no movement of water but the sound was from the toilet. We have a septic system if that makes any difference? Any ideas?

could be that there is a slight leak from the flush valve (flapper)causing the water level to drop ever so slightly until it reaches a point where it tells the fill valve to open and fill the tank.to verify this put a little food coloring into the tank after it has filled.later on look into the bowl and if there is colored water in it then that is whats wrong.
