      Hi all,

In my basement there has always been a smell around the gas water heater, its not natural gas smell but it smells like the exhaust. I’ve taken off the vent pipe on top and blown tru it with air compressor and it seems fine.
The house is two story and this is in the basement. I had the pipes cleaned last year and it didnt seem to improve.

      Any ideas?

      Thanks

      Is the room properly vented.

Sometimes rooms with water heaters etc are pretty well sealed and the exhaust doesn’t vent because the vent can’t pull enough air from the room.

This is why in direct vent firplaces you see both an intake and exhaust pipe.

I remeber in our old home that if you did not open a window to let air in the fireplace would put a lot of smoke into the room.
