screen door replacement

On the front screen door that I have I have every thing up but I can not get the handle to work the right way I drilled the holes and every thing fits except the the button for the out side to the inside the thing is to long .do I have to cut it down to get it to fit so that it will open the door properly?

sometimes there is a tab that you have to break off to get it to match the thickness of the door you are using.
