I am redoing my mother’s kitchen. This house is approx. 30years old. In the kitchen is what she was told by realestate person who said it was ricepaper wallpaper. I need to know if this is correct 1} if this is correct, will i remove it just like regular wallpaper? 2}can it be painted over if this is an option? Is there really such a thing as ricepaper wall paper? the section i peeled off did not look like it had a backing to it. This will be the third room of this house I have to redo. This house has drove me crazy. Please anyone who has any ideas or suggestion(s) please let me know.

      Hi,
It’s true there really is a rice paper wall paper. It is made from parts of the Rice Paper Plant. There is a picture of the plant in the site below.

This site sells Rice Paper wall paper.

You remove the rice paper the same way as you remove timber based wall paper.

The site below shows you another way rice paper is used.

      Hope this helps you out

You ask can you paint over the wallpaper – sure you can, but is it advisable? I would suggest against it. Once wallpaper is painted, it makes it much more difficult to remove. Any texture and the seams telescope through the surface and become very apparent on the painted surface. I always recommend that wallpaper be removed prior to painting.
