Okay. We have a rental house with a Chamberlain GD opener…have owned the house for approx. 12-15 years. Now we need to replace the REMOTES and all I can find at Lowe’s (or Home Depot?) is the “Chamberlain Security +” replacement remotes. (New technology.) This opener is at LEAST 15 years, probably even up to 20 years old.

Opener works great, just need the remotes. I read in Consumer reports that Chamberlain is the manufacturer of Sears GD openers. So I went to Sears tonite to see if they have an opener for these older models. No luck. Said I have to go to the “parts/repair” store. I know where that is, but want to know if anyone else has some experience with this. I’ve driven all over town and am just about ready to suggest replacing the whole darn thing!

      Suggestions?

P.S. I did see (at Sears) a conversion kit for the Sears GD openers…to give it the “rolling codes” that constitute “Security +”

      Can anyone help?

It seems everyone has issues with their garage door. Whether it is the remote control the motor or the spring.

discussions.tommmymac.us does not recommend the changing of the Torsion spring by a do it yourselfer. However if you are interested in seeing how it is done here is website devoted to it.

Chamberlain manufactures remotes and operators for various brand and under numerous lines. For example, all Sears Craftsman machines, Master Mechanic, Liftmaster, Chamberlain and more are all the same. To identify your replacement remote, it is quite easy and these rule apply for all the above brands. Units manufactured from 1982-1992 used the 60 series remotes (61LM, 61CB, 61MM…), from 1993-1996, those units used the Billion Code seires or the 80 series (81LM, 81CB, 81MM…), from 1997 on up the Security+ format was used in the 390MHZ frequency. Chamberlain is now changing their format again because of the new federal regulations coming into effect by 2008 (see Military over taking garage door frequencies article), those will still be Security+ type of format (code rotating), but will now operate in the 315MHZ frequency. The Chamberlain group will be offering upgrade kits for customers who run into garage opener remote control interference. For more info check out the upgrade kit page at the following link:

      Hope this helps!
