i’m having problems with a ge refrigerator.coils iced up blocking air flow so no cool air in fesh food section freezer works great.in other words no defrost.i’ve narrowed it down to either the defrost timer or the defrost thermostat(bi metal can)the heating element is good:(ohmmeter) how can i test if the defrost thermostat is good or should i just replace the timer and the can to be on the safe side.is it rare for the can to fail.i thought of putting it in ice to see if the contacts close.
      what are your opinions.

Advance the timer manually until it enters a defrost cycle. This is easy to tell with the compressor running since it will stop the compressor. Now does it defrost? If so timer is stuck/dead. Still no defrost? thermostat is fried.
