I have an interesting question. I am redoing my deck and have added rope light all the way around the underside of the railing. I have wired a photocell to control the lights coming on and off everyday. I have added a GFCI to the circuit to ensure safety. This all works fine. Now comes the interesting piece. I want to add a dimmer to the mix. I had a dimmer installed between the lights and the GFCI, and I got all kinds of wierd results. There are 2 plugs that are used for the deck lights, and when I had my tester plugged into the first outlet it showed that the hot and ground were reversed. I plugged it into the last plug and it showed that the neutral was missing. When I remove the dimmer from the circuit they both show to be fine. Can a dimmer be used on the load side of a photocell? And if so, how do you get it to work?

is the GFCI a breaker or a recepticle(s)…….

A dimmer switch is usually NOT allowed to control a recepticle…….

Where does the Photocell enter the circuit….

I presume you’ve checked that the rope lighting can be dimmed…….
