PATIO DOOR OPENING

JUST TOOK OUT SLIDING PATIO DOOR AND PUT IN FRENCH DOOR. WHAT IS GOOD TO FILL THE GAP (1/8″ TO 3/8″) AND ABOUT 4-1/2″ WIDE. BEFORE PUTTING ON OUTSIDE TRIM, SHOULD I FILL OPENING WITH GREAT STUFF INSTA-FOAM SEALENT OR SOMETHING SIMILAR? PROBABLY TOO BIG A GAP FOR CAULK. ANY SUGGESTIONS? I COULD SHOVE WOOD STRIPS IN THE GAP. I WOULD LIKE TO GET A GOOD SEAL. IT IS A PELLO DOOR WITH WOOD AND METAL MAKING UP THE OUTER FRAME. THANKS FOR ANY SUGGESTIONS. FRANK S.

Frank,
We just did the exact same thing that you are doing. Had the same problem. This is our second house to remodel, so have used the foam sealant before and it is absolutely ideal for situations just like yours. Only suggestion..allow the sealant to cure approx 24 hours before trimming off the excess. I know the instructions on the can say differently, but take it from someone who has used the product several times.
