My wife wants me to paint our 1966 formica cabinets. I know it can be done, but I need it done right.

I hear that I should sand the surface to scratch it up; that’s no problem. I have an orbital sander I can use for that; I figure a rough sanding edge should do the trick.

But, should I use a primer? If so, which type to use?

And, should I use an oil or latex based paint? I will be using a Wagner paint sprayer if that makes a difference.

This is only the cabinets, not the countertop. I already tiled that over.

      Thanks in advance!

Painting Formica . First, be sure it is clean, then use a bonding primer , and topcoat with a premium grade water base paint.
