A relative of mine asked me a question and instead of giving an incorrect answer, I am turning to the experts to get the correct one. They were having trouble with a leaking wiondow in their home that is 10-15 years old. The contractor removed the siding to see where the leak is coming from and noticed that there is no house wrap(Tyvek) on the exterior of the house. They are very worried that this may lead to even bigger problems. How big of a deal is this? The leak was caused by the original bulder installing the windows incorrectly so nothing they tell me surprises me.

My builder was charging a considerable sum for the optional Tyvek wrap. I chose to skip it as did a lot of people in my development and spend the money elsewhere. I don’t anticipate my windows leaking because of it. My heating costs might be slightly higher but that’s all the downside I anticipate.
