  normally, a box mounts 1/2″ out for drywall. how far do i mount out for drywall + subway tile on a kitchen backsplash?

  You mount the box to accomodate the drywall plus the thickness of the tile.

  They make boxes with a screw that you can move them in and out. Designed specifically for this purpose.
  
  Look for them at Lowes and HD. They are blue Carlon box.
