mending plates

How to I apply mending plates to a piece of wood professionally. I tried using a hammer but it dents the plate and makes the joint look ugly.

I have found that a wood workers vise acts as a good press for the plates. also a couple of large c-clamps with a steel plate for a press plate and a piece of wood to protect the other side will work. the above assums there is room to work on the wood :}
