Lightning struck a tree right next to my house. We were in a room next to the tree when it struck. The television and cable were on, but after the strike the tv and cable box went out and there was a faint smell of smoke. They will not power back on, and I believe they are fried. The garage door opener no longer works either. Did the lightning do this?

yes, you are correct. the emf from the lightning created a very high surge of electricity in your house and “fried” your electronics. If you are using your computer from home, it must be on a surge protector, or was unplugged. contact your insurance if the amount of damage is significantly greater than your deductible.

It is also possible that the lightning has killed the tree. If that is the case, you may want to approach the insurance co. to include removal of the tree before it falls on the house.

      Good Luck!
