My home is a 1960 ranch style. There is blown in insulation but not nearly enough. The previous owner had the brilliant idea of using old carpet and laying it out over the joists and insulation. I want to get additional insulation blown in but was curious if I need to get rid of the old pieces of carpet or just blow in over top. The carpet covers maybe 20% of the area.

it can rot and is a fire hazard. It also can house rodents and insects, things you don’t want in your attic. The carpet supplies an R value of about .2 and is far more trouble than it’s worth. It does make you wonder why someone would go through all that effort for no good reason.
