I am replacing my boiler and got an estimate from my local gas company..I was asking for a boiler that would be of the high efficiency type…85% or more. The tech said that it cannot do so in my type of home, cause it needs a way to vent, and its not the type that vents through chimney as my old one does. Its a Braunan type. He said that they would replace the one I have which is over 40 years old with the same type. Also, they do not make internal coils for heating hot water anymore, which mine had… but it was over 40 years ago.He did say that they do make boilers that make hot water, but those are for homes where there is no room for a water heater. I do have a water heater, but I thought maybe it would be good idea for backup. I recall when I had my 40 gallon water heater installed, I was told to make sure that i tell the installer to prevent the boiler for making its own water with those coils, so it would save me money. My home is a single family home with 2 levels and 3 convection radiators on one floor and the cast iron ones at the top floor…6 total. Naturally, I am at the mercy of the gas company, or in fact, anyone who gives me an estimate, to take their word for it..not knowing much about boilers. BTW, this is a gas boiler that I would be replacing. Does it sound right?..I’m asking those contractors that install boilers hopefully. The price is reasonable.

Not good advice from the salesman. ALL boilers are now more than 84% AFUE. Take a look at this heating plan:

Yes, you really have to find out the MAKE and MODEL to get good answers. There IS more than one machine made.

You need to call a couple more companies. There are many ways to solve any comfort issue today. It sounds to me like you may have a stone foundation and that company does not want to penetrate it for exhaust and combustion air. There is wisdom in a multitude of counselors. Get more bids and get back to us for advice and good luck.
