One burly friend: $500 for the whole job. Electric jackhammer: $50/day, $100 deposit. The concrete was, in fact, only 1- 1 1/2″ thick at the deep end. 4″ clay pipe invaded by Elm tree roots causing the collapse.
After 2 hours of hard work, by my bud, we have an open hole in the basement and open lines to the main sewer. One code approved floor drain, about 3 feet of 4″ PVC pipe, a 4″ Y connector, a few feet of 2″ vent line and an air admittance valve will bring things up to code and working for less than $50. Total cost is going to be less than $700 including new fill and concrete.
DIY wins again!! And the plumbers can stay home or charge someone else for those repairs. I could have done it myself, if I could figure out how to muscle a 100 pound Husky jack hammer with one good arm!!
