Fireplace Air Inlet

My fireplace has a small lever on the left hand side that locks in the up position and can be moved to the down position. I believe the lever is the fresh air intake – but do not know in which position the vent is open. Please help>

If you can get a flashlight and look up the chimney to to see the vent you will know. could build a small fire and do it that way
