I have been struggling with an OLD American Standard 3 knob in line set-up that is probably 40 years old. I have the typical problem, when I turn the diverter to the showerhead water streams out of the spout as well as the shower head. After pulling both hot and cold valves and replacing them, I tried to pull the diverter valve. It looks like the valve is pressed directly into the brass manifold. I can not see any way to remove the diverter without risking the destruction of the entire brass manifold. I have been told that American Standard did make a diverter system that pressed the valve directly into the manifold. If that is the case, will I destroy the unit if I use a puller to extract the valve, and can I purchace a replacement valve anywhere? I’ve been trolling for a few days now and have found no joy. PLEASE HELP. Thanks in advance for any clue as to how to fix this umgefunct diverter.

      As a simple work-around……

Simply replace the existing tub spout with a model with a built-in diverter….

This works and sends all the water to the showerhead when needed.

      “……measure Once…..cut Twice….
throw that one away and cut a new one….”
