After living with it for years I decided to remove some birch paneling from the wall in my living room. Fearing how it was attached had prevented me from doing it until now. Turned out I has little to fears as only 4 nails per sheet and some weak construction adhesive where used to hold the panels up.

The bigger problem is now I have the paneling off I can see what looks like water stains on the drywall that was behind the paneling. I know where the water came from, we had a leak in out roof 9 years ago and this must have been missed.

Do I have to worry about replacing the drywall or will it be okay to skim coat the wall like I was planning?

As long as the drywall is structurally sound and free of mold, use a stain blocking primer and then finish it as you want. Stain blocking primers are available from most quality paint manufacturers.
