We are trying to replace an old light switch/plug outlet in the bathroom with a new GFCI light switch/plug. We can get the plug to work and the light to work but when we try to turn off the light it stays on. We have 2 white wires and two black wires and 1 ground. The new GFCI outlet also has two black wires that come out from the back. We have replaced several other GFCI plugs without a light switch and have had no problems. What are we doing wrong with this one? Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

it could be a switch loop where you need to remove a tab on the device to keep the switch independent from the receptical.without seeing it, it is difficult to say.

I agree with LarryG, One pair of wires is a switch loop. It could be that one of the white wires is a hot switched circuit. I drew it on a piece of paper but don’t know your physical setup. You will need a VOM to find out what is switched hot.

Let us know how it works out.
