Ditra Flooring has an expensive underlayment, somewhat of a waffle type material that is used under the tile. There is also another product similar to this at half the price, and I’m trying to find the name of the product, or where to find it in Wisconsin.

I know from experience you can use hardibacker for tile backing on walls, but whether or not you can use it on floors is unknown. It usually comes in 3×5 sheets, and is reasonably priced. What about using 1/4″ underlayment that is like an AC plywood that is smooth on one side? Check with your local hardware store and see what they suggest. Most stores will have a Contractor Sales area and the people are pretty concise about answering questions like that.

Yes, Ditra is quite expensive. Quiet Walk has a product called “Insulayment”, it is a dense felt material that achieves the same “un-coupling” function as Ditra. About $35 for 100 SQ.FT. Check Menards, or Home Owners Bargain Outlet in West Allis Wi. or Racine Wi. ( HOBOONLINE.COM )
