I have 12′ ceilings in my home (1892) and the ceiling fans are installed with about a 6″ pipe. If the fans are on, even high speed, I cannot feel the air circulating. I wonder if they are actually doing any good, or do I have to be feeling air for them to be doing their job? Should they be hanging on a longer pipe? What is the proper height off the floor for the fans?

If the blades are only 6 inches from the ceiling, then they are probably cavitating (cannot draw air). Being that close to the ceiling prevents proper air circulation.
The blades should be a minimum of 12 inches from the ceiling at any position. (Even a sloped ceiling)
As to the distance from the floor, there is probably a building code for a minimum, but someone else will have to answer that one.
Good Luck!

If the fan blades are set 11’6″ above the floor, having been hung on a 12′ ceiling, you may not feel much of anything at that distance unless you stand directly below the fan.
It would also depend which direction you have the blades rotating. If the blades are set to pull air ‘up’, you may only feel a little air movement at the side walls of the room.
If the fan is small, it may even worsen the situation, that is, it would be less likley you feel anything.
That does not mean the fan isn’t circulating the air.
It may just not be circulating air in the manner or with the volume you desire.

Yes, they need much longer downrods. A 2′ downrod would be acceptable. But that may not be the only problem, you may have crappy fans! What make and model are they? On a higher ceiling it is especially important to have quality fans. I recommend industrial-grade fans, American-made fans, or something with a similar type motor.
