I have a 2 level home which includes a basement. I have steam heat…radiators on the top floor and convection ones on main floor. Problem is that we all know that heat rises..so the bedrooms are overheated and main floor, kitchen, dining room and living room we have to wear robes at tiems. Maybe they should create the opposites, being we spend more time on the main floor and the main floor would be perfect for sleeping. Anyhow, i read somewhere that I may need balance heating. I tried it and it does not seem to work as claimed. Recently bought new windows, house is 85 years old…still have the same problems..hot bedrooms, cool living rooms.

Steam heat is difficult to ‘balance’ but not impossible. What you are telling an experienced steam heating tech is that some radiators upstairs are too large and some downstairs not large enough and/or that the steam vents on those radiators aren’t set right for the timing of the air out of those radiators.

There are automatic vents available to better adjust the radiators when putting the right vents with the radiators doesn’t do the job. Sizing the radiators was probably done a century ago when the house wasn’t insulated as well, so they aren’t the right size any longer.

Yes, you really have to find out the MAKE and MODEL to get good answers. There IS more than one machine made.
