I live in nc will an abundance of red clay is around the foundation of our home. Recently with the water tables being high, we discovered some water in our crawl space.

We had some improper grading next to two sides of our house. I consulted a local waterproofing company and they brought screened sand to fix the grading problem. It was used mainly above the water line on the brick. Is screened sand the proper material to use or should it have been red clay or other dirt for back fill????

Thanks in advance for any advice.

      Best,

      Joey – NC

      Advantages of sand:
      Compacts quickly
      Doesn’t hold water
Drains well (another way of saying the same thing…)

      Advantages of dirt:
better for growing things, since it retains water
      looks better

Not knowing more about your particular situation, most likely sand was the more appropriate backfill.
