My attic has some existing blown in cellulose insulation that has settled. Additionally, the previous owner for some reason took an old carpet (12 by 14) and laid it out flat over the insulation. I think it was to have a place to store boxes without getting them in the insulation. I’d like to blow in more insulation. I have a few questions.
      1. I presume I can blow new insulation over top of the old?
      2. Can I blow the new over top of the carpet?
      3. WHat is my total depth needed? We typically see nights in the mid teens during January. I’m in Northern Kentucky.

You can blow in additional insulation over the old or simply lay additional fiberglass batts over the existing.

Probably best to remove the carpet as it will only act as a medium upon which molds and mildews can grow.

The depth of required insulation is based on your local building code.

R38 should be more than ample but check with your code office to be sure.
