Adding a phone line

To add an extention to the existing phone line coming into the house must you start at the incoming line to the house or can you splice a tap into an existing wire? If a splice can be made, what is the easiest and best way to do this?

I’ve done it by splicing into another outlet, or where
I can splice in most easilly, works good for me.
