We own a home that is about 70 years old and the second story floor is needing to be leveled. When we bought the house 11 years ago, the family we bought the home from had metal support poles installed in the basement due to the house settling. We knew when we bought the house that we would need to do some repair work to the upstairs subfloor. About 4 years ago, we paid someone to come in and totally remodeled our upstairs bathroom. At this time, the contractor not only replaced everything but also tore up the bathroom subfloor and laid all knew flooring. This was a TOTAL job! The contractor had to raise the floor in order to make the floor level. This has caused us to have to “step up” into the bathroom. The bathroom looks great, but we are now ready to make the rest of the 2nd story floor level with the bathroom. Could somebody explain to us how we would go about doing this? We have done a number of construction jobs on our own, but were not sure about how to go about doing this. Thank-you in advance for any instruction or advice.

You need to level the house not each room. There is a reason why the floor is not level. This could be something as simple as jacking up the center of the house and leveling it with correct supports. Or it could be a sign of something as serious as rotting sills or crumbling foundation, and the entire house is sinking. Fixing one room is a stop gap measure and does not address the root cause of the problem.
