In January of this year, I bought an 1885 Victorian (Carpenter’s Gothic) style home, which still has its original tin shingle roofing sections (6″x9″), that we want to keep (especially since the tong and groove roofing is in great condition). However, the previous owner’s maintenance was done in sections – some is painted, tarred, and fiber coated – and some has rusted down to the bare metal. In order to protect and seal the entire roof, and still maintain its beauty, what is (are) the best products to apply to the shingles and what would be the process (take into consideration we do not want a “rubber liquid that will cover the identity of the shingle, nor do we want a “Roof or Tough Kote” that will contract and crack, nor are we rich).

An 1885 roof is about 20 years past it’s projected lifespan and the already in place “repairs” have rendered any other “repairs” useless.

Time to replace the roof with something both as beautiful and functional as the original.

See http://www.roofmenders.com/EmbossedTinShingles.htm for degree of work possible using acrylic. Good luck.
