I got online with Sears “chat” yesterday and asked them the same question. They pretty much said that the “pop” sound is the metal expanding when it’s heated. I didn’t describe the sound as a “pop”, but if they already had a canned answer, it must have come up before.

I agree, VERY annoying and a little unnerving. I keep thinking the thing’s going to explode. Thanks for your reply.
