You are rihgt. I found out the white (neutral) line was broken off at the back of fridge due to corrosion. That is way, as you said, it read 115V when connected to the motor, to draw voltage from the hot wire through the resting motor. Perhaps, occassionally, the corroded white wire was not completely broken, but conducting with a large resistance, so it read 85V instead of 115V.
