The deadly tornado that hit Joplin, Missouri, last night claimed the life of at least 89 people. It’s the latest in a slew of tornados that have been striking a number of states this spring and leaving death and destruction in their wake.

Apparently, this particular tornado was difficult to read because it was “rain-wrapped” and thus obscured. The half-mile wide twister touched down on the west side of the city about 20 minutes after tornado sirens gave residents warning.

For folks living in areas prone to tornados, it’s important to follow some safety guidelines when dealing with the aftermath. These include:

  • Assume all wires on the ground are live.
  • Look for smoking or sparking appliances.
  • Smell and listen for leaky gas connections.
  • Never strike a match!
  • Look at the full list of Tornado Safety Guidelines.

It’s equally important to know where all your emergency shutoffs are for gas and water.
