How does one clean a grimy wooden banister on our “new
“staircase in an old home we bought?

      Hi Phoebe,

What is the ‘consistancy’ of the grim? If it’s nothing of a ‘physical consistance’ and is more like just ‘dirty’ and worn out, you can consider refinishing it. This would involve sanding, staining, and applying poly.

My best to ya and hope this helps.

PS: What are you thinking you can do to ‘clean up’ the banister? (I can’t see it from here …)

Try wiping it down with mineral spirits.

i have got some oak banisters in our new home and they require a clean as they are dusty and grimy. Do i need to do anything special to clean them?
