I read frequently that proper water management relies on drainage planes with overlapping layers that allow water to shed rather than relying on drainage planes attached via adhesives since chemical bonds break down over time.

The flashing products that I have seen that go on the sides of windows appears to be attached to the sheathing via an adhesive. Won’t the adhesive break down over time making the flashing ineffective?

You might think the adhesive would fail but it is unlikely.

Flooring adhesive, for example, can be permanently bound given proper application and even very wet conditions.

There are also no restrictions on using non-adhesive based flashings for windows and doors.

Codes allow for the use of metal, vinyl, and fabric based flashings that can be stapled or nailed into place and these are generally much cheaper than self-adhereing types.
