Quick question; I’ve got the softner all cleaned up and ready to start for the 1sttime in how long…I keep forgetting to buy the salt in town…so wondering if I can run it through a regenerate cycle without the salt? Thanks…

The softener will go through the regeneration but the regeneration won’t do the softener any good without salt. It will tell you if the control valve is capable of successfully completeing a regenration but that’s all.

If you didn’t keep the ion exchanger column wet the softener is shot.

And you cannot regenerate without the rock salt. It exchanges Calcium for Sodium on the column – one of the reasons that water softeners are not good for those with high blood pressure.

But, like I said, if it was in “storage” and the column itself was not kept in water it’s probably no good.
